I grew up in Louisiana and was anything BUT a healthy kid. At age five, I was diagnosed with a laundry list of allergies, including many of my favorite foods, as well as the basically every living creature and plant I may ever see or touch.
The summer after my little sister was born, I put on some significant poundage. I suspect this was largely due to the number of powdered sugar donuts and cupcakes that I consumed in a day while sitting in front of the television, but hey … it could have been anything, right? When it came time to try on uniforms for the new school year, nothing close to a “normal” size fit me. I had also recently started wearing glasses, so it was pretty much a nightmare being the four-eyed fat girl at school for the next several years.
By the time I started seventh grade, I had slimmed down and started to wear contact lenses. It wasn’t until that point in my life that I started to feel “normal”. High school was good to me — I believe that I had a better-than-average high school experience. I was also smart enough to earn a scholarship to a good university.
My first job out of college was a Research Associate in a Diet and Heart Disease lab at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I discovered as an in-shape, fairly-active 21-year-old that I already had high cholesterol!
After a little Q&A with the family, I realized that I had likely inherited this condition and came to realize that I was going to have to start doing something differently if I didn’t want to start popping pills in order to manage a chronic disease for the rest of my life.
Despite what should have been an “aha” moment, I was young, I was having fun being a 20-something, and I just didn’t make it a priority. Over the next 12 years, I stayed busy — I went to graduate school, I got married, I moved to the west coast, I started a new career, I became a manager, I traveled both in the US and internationally for work.
I had an on again/off again relationship with fitness during those years. For a little while, I worked with a personal trainer and attended the free aerobics classes at work. My weight fluctuated, and I was really unhappy when my clothes didn’t fit. I remember one year, I had put aside three different dresses to wear to my husband’s company holiday party. I waited until two hours before the party to try anything on and realized NONE of the dresses fit! I was distraught and ended up wearing a long dumpy-looking work skirt while everyone else at the party (it seemed) was cute & festive.
At the end of 2010, I was given the opportunity to make a change. Change is not easy for me. Change scares me. But it was time, so I jumped into the unknown with my eyes wide open.
I transitioned from working full-time with significant travel to consulting part-time and figuring out what I wanted to do next. For the first time in forever, I was actually thinking about what I *wanted* to do instead of what I had to get through.
In 2011, I founded Wellness Science with the hope of helping women like myself to embrace change and start living the healthy, happy, and balanced lives they deserved.
I’m proud to say that I have:
- Helped women lose weight and feel better about themselves
- Helped women who never exercised and had no desire to exercise find some sort of activity they loved and begin doing it consistently
- Created and shared many Easy, Healthy Recipes and Workouts You Can Do Anywhere
- Helped women change obsessive behaviors and unhealthy habits
I myself have:
- Become a runner with two half-marathons under my belt
- Started The Wellness Scientist Blog, as well as become a regular contributor to several health & fitness magazines!
- Become an official Meatless Monday Blogger and Sweat Pink Ambassador
