Blow On: Look Fabulous in Under An Hour (No Shower Required!)

Truth – I hate showering.  Every time I tell someone this, they crack up.  It is hard to believe if you know me.  I like my hair and clothes to be neat all the time.  I’m just the right amount of matching without being too matchy-match.  But girly girls like me are looking at an hour commitment MINIMUM when it comes to showering and getting ready.  Sometimes the mere idea of it makes me pull the covers back over my head (still not kidding)

And recently, I discovered a lifesaver.  Nope, not dry shampoo (that’s another story) — the blow dry bar!  Now making their way across the US are these clever little shops which offer (you guessed it!) a shampoo and a fabulous blow dry.  That’s it!  No stranger’s newly-cut hair flying across the room at you or caustic chemical smells to contend with.  Just a relaxing shampoo following by a fabulous blow dry and style.  Oh, and a glass of wine or bubbly while you are gettin’ beautified!

There are two different options near me:

1) Drybar (founded by Ali Webb around 2009), which has salons in California, Arizona, New York, DC, Georgia, and Texas, recently opened a new location at Stanford Shopping Center.  It is so pretty inside!  The color scheme is white, gray, and buttercup yellow (Buttercup is also the name of their trademark yellow hairdryer and now available at Sephora!)

2)  Halo – a Bay Area outfit with 3 area locations founded by Los Altan Rosemary Camposano with the alluring tagline “Stop In. Float Out.”  I haven’t had the pleasure of trying one of Halo’s blowouts yet, but there Menlo Park location is basically within walking distance of my house.  It’s on my list!

For ladies that have neither the time nor the money for a full spa day, $35 and 45 minutes to an hour of your time, you can walk out looking fabulous and feeling great.  One of the receptionists at Drybar let me know that they often have Groupon offers, and I managed to snag one for a $17 special.

This video will have you running to your nearest location!

Have you been to a blow dry bar?  Did you leave feeling amazing?  Tell me about it below!

Training Time: Half Marathon, Here I Come

I’ve been quiet for awhile, but I wanted to share that I have started training for the OC Half Marathon that will take place on Sunday, May 5th!

The first thing on my agenda was making sure I had the right socks (which incidentally ended up being Wright Socks :-)
Socks for Runners

I’ve been using the Nike Running Coach Half Marathon Training Plan, which you can see here.  Since the race is on May 5th, I had to jump in at Week 5. Luckily, I’ve been doing lots of jogging & walking over the past several months so I wasn’t totally out of my league.

This plan has been working for me.  Not too many days per week of running, but a couple of days of short runs followed by one long run each week.  It also encourages strength training & yoga plus stretching.

Yesterday, I did some speed training & took a spin around Stanford’s amazing track Cobb Track & Angell field.  Pretty awesome to have such a great place to train within walking distance of home!!

Has anyone else every done a half marathon?  Any advice for this first-timer?

2013, We’re Off to a Good Start!

Only January 10th and already one of my New Year’s resolutions is coming true!  After meeting and working with the amazing Robin Fisher Roffer a couple of years ago on building my personal brand, each January I have taken her advice …

Starting last year, I wrote down my hopes and dreams for the year in a narrative format as if they have already come true.  By March of last year, at least half of what I’d written had become a reality.  One of my goals for 2013 was to get a writing assignment from a health & wellness magazine.  When I wrote out my dreams this year, I said that I had received my assignment in January with others to follow in February.

I was thrilled this morning when I opened up my email and found a note from an editor looking back at me with an assignment for the April issue of her magazine!  I put my dream out into the world, and in just five days it had become a reality!!!!

I don’t know if it gives you the motivation to work harder or that you are willing something towards you.  Whatever it is … it works!

I’ve also stayed true to my health goals.  Despite the CHILLY weather, I’ve been out walking my usual Stanford Dish Trail and even met a couple of new friends along the way :-)

I’ve even got a little vacation to look forward to next month!  A little getaway to Maui, which is LONG overdue!  Next week, I’m pulling my old 2011 Whole Living Action Plan out of the archives & starting the food-based detox to rid my body of all of the extra junk I started eating before Halloween!  Gotta get bikini-body ready by next month!

Best wishes for an awesome 2013 for all of us!  I’ll be back on Monday with a new Meatless Monday recipe!

What’s Past the Comfort Zone?

I’m not going to lie to you … accomplishing your fitness goals is not always a piece of cake.  In fact, it is HARD WORK!

The last few weeks have been super challenging for me.  In addition to moving to a new home, I started working in the office three days a week.  I quickly saw how easy it was to fall back into my old rut of putting my self-care LAST on the priority list.  As a result, my body has been feeling worn down and I can’t seem to get enough rest.

Luckily, I realized this very quickly and started to correct my lazy behaviors.  I firmly believe in practicing what I preach.  If I’m going to motivate and inspire others to take care of themselves, then I have to do the same.

Thanks to the Sexy September Challenge we’re doing this month, I’m lucky enough to have others inspiring me too!  I had a really good run on Tuesday.  Instead of my usual 3.5 mile loop of the Stanford Dish Trail, I decided to take a different route that added another two miles.  During the run, I felt like I was so far out of my comfort zone that I couldn’t see it anymore!  The good (and awfully painful) thing about this particular trail is that once you start the loop, you HAVE to finish it.  It was hilly and the 6pm sun was a menace, but I felt SO good when I was done.  Its the longest run that I have ever done … maybe ever!

I think you have to push past your comfort zone to see what you are made of.  To truly know that you CAN accomplish your goals, despite all of the hurdles in the way.  This is true in fitness, and in life.  Once you see what you can do, nothing can stop you!

Stay in touch on the Wellness Science Facebook page to be inspired & inspire others for the rest of Sexy September!

I love comments & questions, so keep them coming!

21-Day Fitness Challenge – Are You Up for It?

I can’t believe that it’s already March!  It feels like this year is flying by.  That being said, I am not a huge fan of winter and cold weather so BRING ON THE SPRING!!

I extended another 21-day fitness challenge this past week thanks to Kristi Fauth (aka Robobarbie).  The fitness challenge is all about setting a new healthy lifestyle habit.  It takes 21-days to form a new habit … let’s make it one that is good for our bodies!  Doing this with all of you guys who are participating via the Wellness Science Facebook community is awesome and extremely motivating.  I need that extra motivational boost that accountability to others gives me — don’t you find that helps?

On Tuesday, I headed over to Uforia Studios to get my cardio fix Zumba-style.  The 11:45 class with Asya was filled with energy and, as promised, we had fun while we worked our butts off (literally!)  If you have not tried Zumba and you find your regular workouts boring and no longer motivating, I highly recommend you try and class or two.  Zumba is for everyone.  You don’t have to be an experienced dancer.  Just show up willing to work hard and have fun.  It is no surprise that instructor Asya has quite the following.  She adds a little something extra to class by working the room and dancing with everyone.  I’ve never seen anyone end a routine quite like she does either (think back handsprings & splits … yes, I’m serious!)  My abs and hips were still sore for two days after this class, so I must have gotten to some muscles that weren’t used to getting a workout (awesome!)  I will definitely make this part of my new healthy habit.

I want to hear from you!  Leave me a comment below this post and tell me about the workouts that inspire you.  Have a favorite class or instructor?  Tell me about those here too.  And don’t forget to stretch … and breathe! :-)

Prevention is Powerful Medicine

Earlier this year, I attended the Personalized Medicine World Conference in Mountain View, CA.  One of the speakers started out his presentation posing several questions to the audience:

“How many of you are physicians?
How many of you are scientists?
How many of you are venture capitalists?”

Several hands went up after each question was posted.  His last question to us was, “How many of you are patients?”  At that point, EVERY hand in the room was raised.  That was the single commonality among each of us in that room, and that is something that binds each and every one of US together.  What a powerful message he was bringing to us!

As a collective of patients, we had become a community of healthcare consumers where we could share and discuss our opinions and experiences about disease, about health and wellness, about traditional versus alternative care.

When it boils down to it, no one is more invested in our own health and wellness than we are ourselves.  Our health care providers, our friends, and our families care for us and want us to be healthy.  But it is up to each one of us to stay that way, and we have choices.  Educate yourself, practice prevention, and live a happier, healthier life!

What I Learned About Sustainable Eating

My aunt was visiting from Alexandria, Louisiana, the town where I grew up, and I thought an interesting outing for us would be a trip to the San Francisco Ferry Building Farmer’s Market. One of my favorite things about the summer is picking organic heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and herbs right out of our yard to make salads and pasta sauces. Until our own veggies are ready, I love shopping at local farmers’ markets for fresh, organic, local ingredients.
One of the first things that we sampled was a scrumptious vanilla cupcake from the Les Elements Patisserie booth. We planned to split the cupcake so that we could feel free to indulge on other goodies, so I asked the guy manning the booth for a knife. He explained that they didn’t have any knives or paper products because one of their goals is to reduce their impact on the environment. I was completely happy to use my coffee stirrer to cut the cupcake since eco-friendly living also a goal of mine.

After having dessert, we headed indoors for lunch (cupcakes get me every time…). We had steamed clams and the wild shrimp quesadilla daily special from Ferry Plaza Seafood — both dishes were delicious! What inspired me to write this blog post was an older gentleman from Wales who walked up to the bar and asked the waitress what made the shrimp “wild.” She explained the concept of sustainable fishing to the gentleman, and we all spent a few minutes chatting about the subject. Being a pescetarian and a fan of sustainable eating, I know a fair amount about sustainable fishing and even have the Seafood Watch app on my iPhone in case I need assistance at the grocery store. I learned a few things myself from the conversation, and I wanted to share it with you.

Sustainable food is better for people, animals, and the environment. A typical farm laborer or factory worker can work in dangerous conditions for very little pay with very few benefits. In a sustainable food system, workers are better compensated for their work, and in some situations are given fresh produce and even housing as benefits. Sustainable fishing targets specific species while helping to protect animals such as dolphins and sea turtles. It also ensures that our seafood is preserved and will be around for future generations. To learn more about sustainability, I highly recommend the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA) website.

One thing I do hear often is that the cost of sustainable food is a deal-breaker. I’m not going to lie… when I see a pint of raspberries for $3 versus a $6 pint of organic, local raspberries, I do grimace a bit myself. Many times, however, the price of local high-quality sustainable ingredients is comparable to a lower-quality product grown in subpar conditions. We are not going to change every product that we buy overnight, but a few smart changes by educated consumers can effect change on the food industry and ultimately result in healthier, higher-quality products that we and our families deserve.

Mountain View Steps it Up!

I’m impressed, Mountain View!  I went out for a 15-minute walk this morning in my neighborhood while the sun was peeking out, and I was surprised to immediately see 5 other walkers!  Not that I think my neighborhood is inactive, it was just unusual to see an immediate flurry of activity in my relatively quiet neighborhood.

I had just finished reading Tara Parker-Pope’s morning blog on how a less active American workforce is packing on the pounds, so I was intrigued and started counting people that I saw out exercising.  In just a 15-minute lap around my neighborhood, I saw 16 walkers (three pushing baby strollers), 2 cyclists, and 1 runner!  Not too shabby considering that I walked about half a mile and for just a few minutes.

The road to better health can start with just a few minutes per day of walking or other mild to moderate cardiovascular activity.
